I can not have a Christmas website without putting Christmas Song Lyrics on it. Here are some lyrics to your favorite Christmas Songs. These Christmas Songs are sure to put you in the Christmas Spirit. As it says on my home page...I love to start listening to Christmas music quite early (September?). Christmas songs always put me in a great mood and I just love listening to them.

Perhaps you are going Christmas Caroling this year? Here are some great songs to put on your caroling list. I am only able to put song lyrics on my website that are in the "public domain" which means they are not copyrighted and they were written before 1923. Luckily there are lots of good ones! I hope you enjoy these Christmas Songs. Don't forget the Hot Chocolate!

Here are some of my favorites!

Away in a Manger

Away in a manger, no crib for a bed, The little Lord Jesus laid down His sweet head. The stars in the bright sky looked down where He lay, The little Lord Jesus asleep in the hay.

The cattle are lowing, the baby awakes, But little Lord Jesus no crying He makes. I love Thee, Lord Jesus, look down from the sky And stay by my cradle til morning is nigh. (or: And stay by my side until morning is nigh.)

Be near me, Lord Jesus, I ask Thee to stay Close by me forever, and love me, I pray. Bless all the dear children in thy tender care, And fit us for heaven, to live with Thee there

Hark the Herald Angels Sing

Hark! the herald angels sing, "Glory to the new born King, peace on earth, and mercy mild, God and sinners reconciled!" Joyful, all ye nations rise, join the triumph of the skies; with th' angelic host proclaim, "Christ is born in Bethlehem!" Hark! the herald angels sing, "Glory to the new born King!"

Christ, by highest heaven adored; Christ, the everlasting Lord; late in time behold him come, offspring of a virgin's womb. Veiled in flesh the Godhead see; hail th' incarnate Deity, pleased as man with man to dwell, Jesus, our Emmanuel. Hark! the herald angels sing, "Glory to the new born King!"

Hail the heaven-born Prince of Peace! Hail the Sun of Righteousness! Light and life to all he brings, risen with healing in his wings. Mild he lays his glory by, born that man no more may die, born to raise the sons of earth, born to give us second birth. Hark! the herald angels sing, "Glory to the new born King!"

Come, Desire of nations, come, fix in us thy humble home; rise, the woman's conquering Seed, bruise in us the serpent's head. Adam's likeness, Lord, efface; stamp thine image in its place. Second Adam from above, Reinstate us in thy love. Hark! the herald angels sing, "Glory to the new born King!"

Adam’s likeness, Lord, efface, Stamp Thine image in its place: Second Adam from above, Reinstate us in Thy love. Let us Thee, though lost, regain, Thee, the Life, the inner man: O, to all Thyself impart, Formed in each believing heart. Hark! the herald angels sing, “Glory to the newborn King!”

Silent Night

Silent night! Holy night! All is calm, all is bright round yon Virgin Mother and Child, Holy infant so tender and mild, sleep in Heavenly peace! sleep in Heavenly peace!

Silent night! Holy night! Shepherds quake at the sight; glories stream from Heaven afar, Heavenly hosts sing Alleluia, Christ, the Saviour, is born! Christ, the Saviour, is born!

Silent night! Holy night! Son of God, Love's pure light radiant, beams from Thy Holy face, with the dawn of redeeming grace, Jesus, Lord at Thy birth, Jesus, Lord at Thy birth.

Jingle Bells

(long version) Dashing through the snow In a one-horse open sleigh O'er the fields we go Laughing all the way Bells on bobtails ring Making spirits bright What fun it is to laugh and sing A sleighing song tonight

(chorus) |: Jingle bells, jingle bells, Jingle all the way; Oh! what fun it is to ride In a one-horse open sleigh. Jingle bells, jingle bells, Jingle all the way; Oh! what fun it is to ride In a one-horse open sleigh.:|

A day or two ago I thought I'd take a ride And soon, Miss Fanny Bright Was seated by my side, The horse was lean and lank Misfortune seemed his lot He got into a drifted bank And then we got upsotb. |: chorus :|

A day or two ago, The story I must tell I went out on the snow, And on my back I fell; A gent was riding by In a one-horse open sleigh, He laughed as there I sprawling lie, But quickly drove away. |: chorus :|

Now the ground is white Go it while you're young, Take the girls tonight and sing this sleighing song; Just get a bobtailed bay Two fortyc[›] as [for] his speed [and] Hitch him to an open sleigh And crack! you'll take the lead. |: chorus :|

What Child is This?

1. What Child is this who, laid to rest

On Mary’s lap, is sleeping? Whom angels greet with anthems sweet While shepherds watch are keeping? This, this is Christ the King, Whom shepherds guard and angels sing; Haste, haste, to bring Him laud, The Babe, the Son of Mary!

2. Why lies He in such mean estate Where ox and ass are feeding? Good Christian, fear, for sinners here The silent Word is pleading. Nails, spear shall pierce him through, The Cross be borne for me, for you; Hail, hail the Word made flesh, The Babe, the Son of Mary!

3. So bring Him incense, gold and myrrh; Come peasant, king to own Him. The King of kings salvation brings; Let loving hearts enthrone Him. Raise, raise, the song on high, The virgin sings her lullaby; Joy, joy, for Christ is born, The Babe, the Son of Mary!

We Three Kings

We three kings of Orient are; Bearing gifts we traverse afar, Field and fountain, moor and mountain, Following yonder star.

Refrain

O star of wonder, star of light,

Star with royal beauty bright,

Westward leading, still proceeding,

Guide us to thy perfect light.

Born a King on Bethlehem’s plain Gold I bring to crown Him again, King forever, ceasing never, Over us all to reign.

Refrain

Frankincense to offer have I; Incense owns a Deity nigh; Prayer and praising, voices raising, Worshipping God on high.

Refrain

Myrrh is mine, its bitter perfume Breathes a life of gathering gloom; Sorrowing, sighing, bleeding, dying, Sealed in the stone cold tomb.

Refrain

Glorious now behold Him arise; King and God and sacrifice; Alleluia, Alleluia, Sounds through the earth and skies.

Refrain

The Wassail Song

Here we come a-wassailing Among the leaves so green; Here we come a-wand'ring So fair to be seen.

REFRAIN Love and joy come to you, And to you your wassail too; And God bless you and send you a Happy New Year And God send you a Happy New Year.

Our wassail cup is made Of the rosemary tree, And so is your beer Of the best barley.

REFRAIN

We are not daily beggars That beg from door to door; But we are neighbours' children, Whom you have seen before.

REFRAIN

Call up the butler of this house, Put on his golden ring. Let him bring us up a glass of beer, And better we shall sing.

REFRAIN

We have got a little purse Of stretching leather skin; We want a little of your money To line it well within.

REFRAIN

Bring us out a table And spread it with a cloth; Bring us out a mouldy cheese, And some of your Christmas loaf.

REFRAIN

God bless the master of this house Likewise the mistress too, And all the little children That round the table go

REFRAIN

Good master and good mistress, While you're sitting by the fire, Pray think of us poor children Who are wandering in the mire.

Up on the House Top

Up on the housetop reindeer pause Out jumps good old Santa Claus Down through the chimney with lots of toys All for the little ones, Christmas joys

Chorus: Ho, ho, ho! Who wouldn't go! Ho, ho, ho! Who wouldn't go! Up on the housetop, click, click, click Down through the chimney with old Saint Nick

First comes the stocking of little Nell Oh, dear Santa, fill it well Give her a dollie that laughs and cries One that will open and shut her eyes

(chorus)

Next comes the stocking of little Will Oh, just see what a glorious fill! Here is a hammer and lots of tacks Also a ball and a whip that cracks

(chorus)

Toy Land

Toyland, Toyland, Little girl and boy land, While you dwell within it, You are ever happy then.

Childhood's joyland, Mystic, merry Toyland! Once you pass its borders, You can ne'er return again.

O Little Town of Bethlehem

O little town of Bethlehem, How still we see thee lie! Above thy deep and dreamless sleep The silent stars go by; Yet in thy dark streets shineth The everlasting Light; The hopes and fears of all the years Are met in thee to-night.

O morning stars, together Proclaim the holy birth! And praises sing to God the King, And peace to men on earth. For Christ is born of Mary, And gathered all above, While mortals sleep, the angels keep Their watch of wondering love.

How silently, oh how silently, The wondrous gift is given! So God imparts to human hearts The blessings of his heaven. No ear may hear his coming, But in this world of sin, Where meek souls will receive him, still The dear Christ enters in.

Where children pure and happy Pray to the blessed Child, Where misery cries out to thee, Son of the mother mild; Where charity stands watching And faith holds wide the door, The dark night wakes, the glory breaks, And Christmas comes once more.

O holy Child of Bethlehem! Descend to us, we pray; Cast out our sin and enter in, Be born in us to-day. We hear the Christmas angels The great glad tidings tell; O come to us, abide with us, Our Lord Emmanuel!

O Holy Night

O Holy Night - Version 1:

O holy night! The stars are brightly shining, It is the night of Our dear Saviour's birth.

Long lay the world In sin and error pining, 'Til He appear'd And the soul felt its worth.

A thrill of hope The weary world rejoices, For yonder breaks A new and glorious morn. Fall on your knees! O, hear the angels' voices! O night divine, O night when Christ was born; O night divine, O night, O night Divine.

Led by the light of Faith serenely beaming, With glowing hearts By His cradle we stand.

So led by light of A star sweetly gleaming, Here come the wise men From Orient land.

The King of Kings Lay thus in lowly manger; In all our trials Born to be our friend.

He knows our need, To our weakness is no stranger, Behold your King! Before Him lowly bend!

Behold your King, Behold your King. Truly He taught us To love one another; His law is love And His gospel is peace.

Chains shall He break For the slave is our brother; And in His name All oppression shall cease. Sweet hymns of joy In grateful chorus raise we, Let all within us Praise His holy name.

Christ is the Lord! O praise His Name forever, His power and glory Evermore proclaim. His power and glory Evermore proclaim.

O Come All Ye Faithful

O come, all ye faithful, joyful and triumphant, O come ye, O come ye, to Bethlehem. Come and behold Him, born the King of angels;

Refrain

O come, let us adore Him, O come, let us adore Him, O come, let us adore Him, Christ the Lord.

True God of true God, Light from Light Eternal, Lo, He shuns not the Virgin’s womb; Son of the Father, begotten, not created;

Refrain

Sing, choirs of angels, sing in exultation; O sing, all ye citizens of heaven above! Glory to God, all glory in the highest;

Refrain

See how the shepherds, summoned to His cradle, Leaving their flocks, draw nigh to gaze; We too will thither bend our joyful footsteps;

Refrain

Lo! star led chieftains, Magi, Christ adoring, Offer Him incense, gold, and myrrh; We to the Christ Child bring our hearts’ oblations.

Refrain

Child, for us sinners poor and in the manger, We would embrace Thee, with love and awe; Who would not love Thee, loving us so dearly?

Refrain

Yea, Lord, we greet Thee, born this happy morning; Jesus, to Thee be glory given; Word of the Father, now in flesh appearing.

Refrain

Joy to the World

Verse 1

Joy to the world! the Lord is come; Let earth receive her King; Let every heart prepare him room, And heaven and nature sing, And heaven and nature sing, And heaven, and heaven, and nature sing.

Verse 2

Joy to the Earth! the Saviour reigns; Let men their songs employ; While fields and floods, rocks, hills, and plains Repeat the sounding joy, Repeat the sounding joy, Repeat, repeat the sounding joy.

Verse 3

No more let sins and sorrows grow, Nor thorns infest the ground; He comes to make His blessings flow Far as the curse is found, Far as the curse is found, Far as, far as, the curse is found.

Verse 4

He rules the world with truth and grace, And makes the nations prove The glories of His righteousness, And wonders of His love, And wonders of His love, And wonders, wonders, of His love

Jolly Old St. Nicholas

Jolly Old Saint Nicholas, Lean your ear this way; Don't you tell a single soul, What I'm going to say

Christmas Eve is coming soon; Now you dear old man, Whisper what you'll bring to me; Tell me if you can.

When the clock is striking twelve; When I'm fast asleep, Down the chimney broad and black, With your pack you'll creep; All the stockings you will find Hanging in a row; Mine will be the shortest one, You'll be sure to know.

Johnny wants a pair of skates; Susy wants a dolly; Nellie wants a story book; She thinks dolls are folly; As for me, my little brain Isn't very bright; Choose for me, old Santa Claus, What you think is right

It Came Upon the Midnight Clear

It came upon the midnight clear, That glorious song of old, From angels bending near the earth, To touch their harps of gold; “Peace on the earth, good will to men, From Heaven’s all gracious King.” The world in solemn stillness lay, To hear the angels sing.

Still through the cloven skies they come With peaceful wings unfurled, And still their heavenly music floats O’er all the weary world; Above its sad and lowly plains, They bend on hovering wing, And ever over its Babel sounds The blessèd angels sing.

Yet with the woes of sin and strife The world has suffered long; Beneath the angel strain have rolled Two thousand years of wrong; And man, at war with man, hears not The love-song which they bring; O hush the noise, ye men of strife And hear the angels sing.

And ye, beneath life’s crushing load, Whose forms are bending low, Who toil along the climbing way With painful steps and slow, Look now! for glad and golden hours Come swiftly on the wing. O rest beside the weary road, And hear the angels sing!

For lo! the days are hastening on, By prophet-bards foretold, When with the ever circling years Comes round the age of gold; When peace shall over all the earth Its ancient splendors fling, And the whole world send back the song Which now the angels sing.

God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen

1. God rest you merry, gentlemen, Let nothing you dismay, For Jesus Christ our Saviour Was born upon this day, To save us all from Satan's power When we were gone astray: O tidings of comfort and joy, comfort and joy, O tidings of comfort and joy.

2. In Bethlehem, in Israel, This blessed Babe was born, And laid within a manger Upon this blessed morn, The which His Mother Mary Did nothing take in scorn: O tidings ...

3.From God our heavenly Father A blessèd angel came, And unto certain shepherds Brought tidings of the same, How that in Bethlehem was born The Son of God by name: O tidings ...

4. The shepherds at those tidings Rejoicèd much in mind, And left their flocks a-feeding In tempest, storm and wind, And went to Bethlehem straightway, This blessèd Babe to find: O tidings ...

5. But when to Bethlehem they came, Whereat this Infant lay, They found Him in a manger, Where oxen feed on hay; His mother Mary kneeling, Unto the Lord did pray: O tidings ...

6. Now to the Lord sing praises, All you within this place, And with true love and brotherhood Each other now embrace; This holy tide of Christmas All others doth deface:3 O tidings ...

Deck the Halls

Deck the halls with boughs of holly, Fa la la la la, la la la la. 'Tis the season to be jolly, Fa la la la la, la la la la. Don we now our gay apparel, Fa la la, la la la, la la la. Toll the ancient Yule tide carol, Fa la la la la, la la la la. See the blazing Yule before us, Fa la la la la, la la la la. Strike the harp and join the chorus. Fa la la la la, la la la la. Follow me in merry measure, Fa la la, la la la, la la la. While I tell of Yule tide treasure, Fa la la la la, la la la la. Fast away the old year passes, Fa la la la la, la la la la. Hail the new, ye lads and lasses, Fa la la la la, la la la la. Sing we joyous, all together, Fa la la, la la la, la la la. Heedless of the wind and weather, Fa la la la la, la la la la.

Angels We Have Heard on High

Angels we have heard on high Sweetly singing o’er the plains And the mountains in reply Echoing their joyous strains. CHORUS:

Gloria, in excelsis Deo! Gloria, in excelsis Deo! Come to Bethlehem and see Him Whose birth the angels sing; Come, adore on bended knee, Christ the Lord, the newborn King. Chorus See Him in a manger laid

Whom the angels praise above; Mary, Joseph, lend your aid, While we raise our hearts in love. Chorus

Shepherds, why this jubilee? Why your joyous strains prolong? What the gladsome tidings be Which inspire your heavenly song? Chorus

The First Noel

The first Noel the angels did say Was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay; In fields where they lay keeping their sheep, On a cold winter's night that was so deep. REFRAIN

Noel! Noell! Noel! Noel! Born is the King of Israel! They lookèd up and saw a star Shining in the east, beyond them far; And to the earth it gave great light, And so it continued both day and night. REFRAIN

And by the light of that same star Three wise men came from country far; To seek for a King was their intent, And to follow the star wherever it went. REFRAIN

This star drew nigh to the northwest: O'er Bethlehem it took its rest; And there it did both stop and stay, Right over the place where Jesus lay. REFRAIN

Then entered in those wise men three, Full rev'rently upon their knee, And offered there, in his presence, Their gold and myrrh, and frankincense. REFRAIN

Then let us all with one accord Sing praises to our heavenly Lord That hath made heaven and earth of nought, And with His blood mankind hath bought. REFRAIN
